WINDSOR, Ont. - The TMU Bold men's volleyball team were unable to hand the Windsor Lancers their first loss of the season, as they fell 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 26-28) on Sunday afternoon at the Toldo Lancer Centre.
The match was the first visit to the newly opened Toldo Lancer Centre for the Bold, while it capped off a two match weekend for the team after playing host to the McMaster Marauders on Friday night.
The Bold were unable to pick up the first win of the season they were looking for, as the Lancers set the tone in the first frame. Windsor grabbed a hold of an early lead in the opening set and was able to keep TMU at bay throughout. The Lancers went on a 6-2 run to take a 24-16 lead, and closed out the set three points later, despite four kills in the frame by Alex King.
In a much more contested, back-and-forth second set, it wasn't until the late stages that Windsor took control. With TMU holding a 22-21 lead after a Lucas Yang kill, the home side notched three-straight points to flip the script and set up a set point of their own. For the second-straight frame it was Zach Albert who sealed the deal for the Lancers, dashing the Bold's hopes of tying the match at a set a piece.
In a must-win third frame, TMU got the start they were looking for after back-to-back blocks from King, then later a kill from King, which helped the visitors hop out to an early 9-4 lead. The Bold would take control of the set with four-straight points to take a 24-22 lead. However, after appearing like they would be forcing a fourth set, the Lancers fended off a trio of set points and eventually rallied off three consecutive points of their own to take the frame 28-26.
Despite the loss, King was a bright spot for the Bold. The Ottawa, Ont. product was relied on heavily throughout by Niko Rukavina's side and did all he could to give TMU a chance to pull out the win. King led the team in both kills with 12 and blocks with five. King's game-high five blocks helped him move into second in the OUA with 0.94 blocks-per-set.Â
Jacob Walker chipped in nine kills, helping him move to fourth in the conference in the stat category with 55. Taylor Wenzel had a game-high 31 assists.
Albert led the way for the Lancers, matching King's 12 kills, while also chipping in a service ace and four digs on the afternoon. Windsor moved to 5-0 with the win.
TMU will be back in action next weekend, as they travel to Kingston for a pair of contests against the Queen's Gaels. The Gaels currently hold a 2-1 record and will enter the match on a two-game winning streak. Queen's played TMU twice during the 2021-22 season, winning both matches. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights at the Queen's Athletic and Recreation Centre (ARC).
