Bold finish on the court, top Algoma in 94-45 blowout

TORONTO, ONT. — The stands at Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) Saturday afternoon were roaring for the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team, who blew out the Algoma Thunderbirds 94-45 after a tough loss on the road Friday evening.

The third quarter was the highlight of the game for TMU, as they tightened up on both offensive and defensive ends despite an established lead throughout the game's first half.

The team held the Thunderbirds to only three points throughout the quarter, while adding 35 onto the board. They also added 15 rebounds, scoring 17 points off turnovers and shot 72.2 per cent from the field.

"That third quarter was important for us in terms of playing our best 10 minutes, imposing our will on those guys, and letting that team know that this game's over," head coach Dave DeAveiro said.

Finishing the job has been a struggle since the start of the season for the Bold, whose three losses were all neck-and-neck games that fell short in the fourth quarter or in overtime.

"We've lost in the last five minutes of each game in three close games," DeAveiro said, adding that how a team closes a game is important.

He said Friday's game against McMaster was another lesson learned, and that as heartbreaking as those losses were, identifying problem areas and correcting them are more beneficial than a 50-point game. "I think that's the next step for our group as we mature, is how well we run our offence and how we lock in our defence."

According to the coach, the team returned from Hamilton around 1 a.m. Saturday morning and were back at the MAC by 9:30 a.m. to watch game tape, before tip-off against Algoma at 4 p.m.

Forward Aaron Rhooms said the challenge of back-to-back games is what every player wants.

"You've got to get used to it, especially if you have aspirations to [go] further in your career," he said. "As a team, we handled it really well. We had a tough game last night, but we locked in today and had faith in each other."

David Walker, in agreement with his teammate, added that handling losses is only a matter of how a team "bounces back."

"Three games, game-by-game, we've just got to learn from that," he said.

The Bold looked dominant straight from tip-off. Using the full length of the court and driving up to the rim, the team put up 24 points in the paint throughout the first half.

By the second half, it had become clear that TMU had the game.

Both David Walker and Aaron Rhooms put on an offensive clinic, shooting 50 and 58.8 per cent from the field and scoring 21 and 25 points, respectively.

Point guard Ankit Choudhary and forward Simon Chamberlain also produced on the court on their supportive and defensive ends. Choudhary had eight assists and Chamberlain had nine rebounds, while they each scored nine points for the team.

"This year, we need Ankit to lead and facilitate," DeAveiro said. "Eight assists, for me, is a stat that stands out because it means [David and Aaron] are getting shots in, and maturing as a player means he can support his team and step up to put up points when needed."

The coach said that the next few games will be challenging, especially being on the road, but should allow for more maturation for the team on the court.

The Bold will be back on the road on Friday, November 25 for a doubleheader weekend against the Laurentian Voyageurs before playing the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday. Tip-off for Friday's game is set for 8 p.m. and you can tune in at OUA.tv.
