Marauders take a straight set win from Bold

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's volleyball squad suffered their fourth consecutive loss on Friday night, failing to record a win in the group's 3-0 sweep with the McMaster Marauders.

Despite their hiccup in the third set, the Marauders coasted to their fifth win on the season with the help of Sam Cooper's eight-kill performance. With the shutout loss, the Bold extended their historic woes against the Marauders, dropping to 2-16 all-time against the reigning champions.

"You're not gonna stop someone like that. You gotta work to control him," said interim head coach Niko Rukavina on Cooper's excellence.

The Bold spent much of their first set with the nationally-ranked Marauders far behind the pace and unable to throw a wrench into the visitors' offensive plans.

Despite trailing the Bold 2-1 in the opening moments of the set, McMaster would lead the home side the entire rest of the way and not allow the Bold to come within three points of striking distance throughout the remainder of the frame, taking the set by a decisive 25-15 score.

After punctuating their first-set victory with a six-point run to close out the win, the maroon and black heavily outscored their opposition in the middle stanza and kept the line constantly moving on the attack.

Outside hitters Sam Cooper and Maxime Gratton led the charge for the Hamilton side, combining for half a dozen kills and 17 points to effortlessly take the second set from the Bold in 25-14 fashion.

As for TMU, the blue and gold's inability to keep a clean structure on both ends of the ball led to the home squad getting heavily outnumbered on the scoreboard. The Bold would wrap up the second set, having committed 12 errors on 21 attacks.

The Bold coach believes: "not letting the outcome of the game affect our play" was the biggest strength of theirs throughout the Marauders onslaught.

Despite being blown out of the water in the second set, the Bold opened up their third look at the Marauders with a quick 2-0 lead. With their backs against the wall, TMU continued to stick it to the visitors with every passing play and made what appeared to be an easy route for the Marauders, a battle for every single serve and dig.

Outside hitter Kai Higuchi highlighted the comeback bid for the Bold, racking up back-to-back aces to inject some life into the home crowd.

Despite the late-game heroics, the Bold would fail to push the Marauders another round, dropping the third and final set by a 25-23 score.

"To see our guys battle and have a chance to push [McMaster] to four or five is really impressive," said Rukavina.

The Bold will turn to a matchup with Windsor in search of their first win of the season. First serve flies Sunday at 4:00 in Windsor.
