TMU shutout in game one of North Bay road trip

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's hockey team failed to get the offence going in North Bay, falling 3-0 to the Nipissing Lakers in their Friday night affair.

Nipissing goaltender Chantelle Sandquist picked up her league-leading second shutout of the season, while forward Emma Thomas picked up a goal and an assist to lead the Lakers to their fifth consecutive win over TMU.

For the second time this season, the Bold surrendered a trio of goals to the Lakers during the group's front end of their North Bay road trip.

In similar fashion to their 4-1 loss to the Lakers earlier in the year, the blue and gold witnessed the sixth-ranked team in the country strike on back-to-back possessions midway through the middle frame.

With the score favouring the home side as the second period got underway, Kamryn Groomes doubled the Lakers 1-0 lead with a rocket coming just below the Bold's hash marks. Forward Lana Duriez would pick up the primary assist on the tally and play a big role in setting up a wide-open look for Groomes on the rebound.

Madison Desmerais added another dent to the scoreboard less than two minutes later, slapping home yet another tally into an open TMU cage to snap a three-game goalless drought and bolster the Lakers lead even more.

Following the goals, Nipissing continued to take it to the trailing Bold side, piling up the shots and keeping the limited TMU attack at bay. Despite the Bold leading the charge out of the gate, the Toronto side would fall well behind the eight ball and remain idle there for the remainder of the night.

The group would sprinkle just three shots in the third and final frame, emphasizing the lack of traction for the group offensively in the team's seventh loss on the season.

The Bold  attack will get another shot at cracking the armor of the Nipissing Lakers tomorrow afternoon as the group looks to wrap up their road trip on a high. Puck drop is set for 2:30 in North Bay.
