Bold blowout Warriors to secure first victory

TORONTO - After going winless in their opening two matches, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's basketball team had a hot shooting night and took a commanding 97-48 win over the Waterloo Warriors.

In the dominant victory, Bold starting point guard Ankit Choudhary led the way for the Bold with 27 points in 27 minutes while also posting five steals and four assists. Meanwhile, forward Aaron Rhooms added 16 in his own right alongside eight rebounds.

"I loved it," said Rhooms on the Bold's performance tonight. "I know we're going to build on this and carry it throughout the rest of the games because we're capable. I always tell the guys that when we play together we're unstoppable."

The Bold began their fiery night from beyond the arc in the first quarter — draining six triples in the opening 10 minutes. They finished the night shooting 17-36 from three for 56.7 percent.

Throughout the first half, the quick ball movement and shifting offence were too much for the Warriors' defence to handle as the lead jumped to 36 by the end of the second quarter.

"I liked the way we moved the ball today," said Bold head coach David DeAveiro. "When we move the ball like that, we can shoot it like that."

On the other end of the court, the Bold's pressing defence smothered the Waterloo offence — limiting them to only 21 points and forcing 12 turnovers in the half. The Warriors were also inefficient as they went 8-32 from the field at the end of two.

"They came in today, followed the game plan, they locked down, focused on what their plan was and competed," said DeAveiro. "When we compete like that, we have a chance to win every game."

"Today, we really locked into our principles and were able to blowout a great team," added Rhooms.

Choudhary found his stroke early with 22 points going into halftime — including six threes to his name. His pull-up threes combined with his composure when leading the Bold offence made him a threatening option throughout the night.

"They started off in a zone [defence] and kept that up throughout the game. When there's a zone, there's a lot of opportunities to get open shots, especially from three," said Choudhary. "I just took the open ones, then kind of got hot."

At the beginning of the third, much of the same continued for the Bold. Their transition offence led to them extending their lead to a game-high 52 in the frame. For the Bold, the threes didn't stop there either — adding five more on seven looks before the end of the third quarter.

The game was all but wrapped up in the fourth as the Bold kept their commanding lead. However, the Warriors' second unit limited the Bold to 13 points on 6-21 shooting as they looked to trim TMU's advantage.

Nonetheless, the wide margin held for the Bold and they were able to gain their first victory of the season.

The Bold now prepare for their game against the McMaster Marauders on Friday at the Burridge Gym in Hamilton, Ont.

"Today was a good step in moving forward and getting ready to play McMaster on Friday night," said DeAveiro.
