Bold chase history in national quarter-final matchup with UBC

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team has the opportunity to make history Thursday afternoon at the 2022 U SPORTS National Championship in the quarter-final.

The team will be playing the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds in hopes of not only inching closer to winning this season's national title, but also winning a match at the national championship tournament for the first time in team history. In the team's only other appearance at nationals in 2013, TMU went 0-2.

"It's a privilege to be here, our goal is really just to leave it all on the pitch," team captain Christian Westlaken said, who added that this match might be his last time playing competitive university soccer. "We just want to make the school proud and make sure we did everything we could out there."

TMU earned the sixth seed of the tournament with a (9-3-0, 2-1) record following their loss to the McMaster Marauders in the Ontario University Athletics final, while UBC ranks in the third spot with (9-3-3, 3-0). The Thunderbirds claimed the Canada West title this season for the fifth straight year.

"Our top priority is making sure that everybody is healthy," head coach Filip Prostran said.

He also said the team would be using the provincial championship loss as fuel for nationals, and that the Bold will be putting their best foot forward in Thursday's game.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. Eastern and will be broadcast live on the CBC Sports YouTube channel.

The Bold will play again on Friday in either a championship or consolation semifinal.
