Santos stays hot, Bold blank Blues

TORONTO - A brace from Justin Santos and a quality defensive effort was all the Bold needed in taking care of the Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday night, picking up a 3-0 win in the first edition of this year's subway series.

Second-year forward Karamvir Mehmi found the back of the net in the 80th minute before mimicking his teammate Santos' celebration to send Downsview into hysterics.

"We always love these games," said an elated Santos after the win.

The Bold opened up the game with ferocity, conviction and in search of revenge following last year's loss to the Blues in front of the home supporters.

Head coach of the Bold Filip Prostran praised the historic rivalry between the two Toronto sides, describing how: "For it to be a special rivalry there has to be two good teams, two good programs and that's what exists."

The blue and gold kept the Varsity Blues defenders busy throughout the offensive frame, powering the opposing goal with half a dozen shot attempts before threading the needle on a penalty kick.

After recording a hat trick in a 7-1 thumping over Queen's last weekend, Santos stepped up to the spot and calmly delivered the game's initial marker. The Bold would play out the duration of the half and head to the change rooms with the lead.

The Bold, having already landed the game's first and most vital punch, set their sights on doubling their score before knocking the Blues out of the game.

Just minutes into the second half, Santos added to his and the team's goal total on the night, placing a shot directly into the bottom right corner to go up a pair.

"He's been a huge threat for us. You can see what he brings to the game," said Santos' teammate Faisal Ghaffur following the match.

After picking up a win in their final home match of the season, the Bold leapfrogged Toronto in the OUA East standings, now sitting second with a 5-2 record, and a string of four consecutive wins behind them.

The group kicks off a five-game road trip to close out the regular season with a stop at Varsity Stadium to wrap up the season's subway series. The match takes place this upcoming Saturday at 3:15 p.m.

Prostran expects his side to find inspiration from within as they embark on this journey away from home.
