Bold top Badgers in Top 10 battle

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team exploded for six goals earlier this afternoon, knocking off the nationally ranked Brock Badgers in a high scoring 6-4 contest.

Kyle Bollers highlighted the attack for the Toronto side, registering five points in the road win. Between the pipes, first-year goaltender Kai Edmonds picked up his fifth straight victory, keeping his clean record intact through the opening three weeks of the season.

The Bold and Badgers opened up their first meeting of the season with a hot and heavy initial frame, with physicality and post-whistle shenanigans being the common theme all throughout.

The Badgers kicked off the scoring less than six minutes into Saturday's matinee after sophomore Zach Taylor lit the lamp for his first of the season. Playing well above the Bold blue line, the defender batted down a shot from the point to beat TMU to the punch.

Coincidentally, Taylor's last goal for the Badgers came all the way back in April when his side took down the Bold in the OUA West division final.

Back then, Taylor's marker aged to be the game-winner in the Badgers 5-2 win over the former Rams side. That would not be the case in today's matchup, however, as Kyle Bollers slammed the door shut as far as recurring history was concerned.

The second-year forward streaked down the wing before beating goaltender Mario Peccia blocker side for his team-leading sixth goal of the season to knot the game up at one apiece.

The goal would come shorthanded for the visitors, and show just how versatile Bollers has been for the Toronto side all year long.

The second period is where the Bold put their offensive game into gear, scoring three unanswered goals to promptly respond to the Badgers early 2-1 lead in the frame.

Jesse Barwell kicked off the team's second-period onslaught just minutes after the Badgers regained the lead. The fourth-year forward connected with Patrick Fellows on a no-look pass to cause calamity in the Badgers defensive zone. Fellows proceed to rip the puck in a conveniently open cage to knot the game up at twos.

The Bold struck again less than three minutes later following a highlight-reel goal firing off the stick of Zachary Shankar. Shorthanded, the veteran blueliner streaked down the wing before unleashing a rocket just below the crossbar to give TMU their first lead of the afternoon.

Connor Bowie would later tack on an insurance marker to completely silence the home crowd. Three consecutive markers coming in less than eight minutes would stun the nationally ranked Badgers and send them to the dressing room both shocked and in dire need of a response.

Second-year Cole Tymkin would give his side short-lived hope with his second goal of the season to open up the third frame. Jacob Kamps and Patrick Fellows would later add an extra pair of insurance markers for TMU before Brandon Caruso potted the Badgers fourth goal with 13 seconds remaining with the damage already done.

With the victory, TMU moves up to second in the OUA West standings and look to make more headway next weekend in Thunder Bay when they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Puck drop is set for Friday at 7 p.m.
