Bollers hat-trick lead Bold to win over Thunderwolves in goal filled night

THUNDER BAY, Ont. - Off the back of another Kyle Bollers hat-trick, the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team took home another two points with a 6-4 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday night in Thunder Bay.

The second-year forward now has nine goals and 15 points in only seven games. Meanwhile, Garrett Forrest held down the fort in goal for the Bold with 30 saves in the victory.

TMU opened the goal-filled night with a strike from Kevin Gursoy midway through the first as he rifled a shot from the slot past Thumdewolves netminder Christian Cicigoi.

The Thunderwolves quickly answered back, however, with a goal from Spencer Blackwell around a minute later. Regardless of the goal, the Bold kept pushing as Bollers and Elijah Roberts potted two goals in a three-minute, 23-second span with both coming on the power play.

In the second period, Bollers tripled the lead with a shorthanded goal as he wristed a shot past Cicigoi after Jesse Barwell found him alone in the slot.

Lakehead found one of their own later in the frame with a goal from Josh Van Unen, but the Bold quickly restored their three-goal lead with another power play goal. Will Portokalis squeaked a shot from the right hashmarks behind Ciciogi's glove to make it 5-2 heading into the third.

Despite the Bold lead, the Thunderwolves almost mounted a comeback in the third. Two consecutive Lakehead goals midway through the period from Keighan Gerrie and Tyler Ho made it a 5-4 game in the final stages of the night.

Nonetheless, the Bold held on and Bollers added another into the empty net to secure the hat-trick. TMU looks to sweep the back-to-back against the Thunderwolves on Sunday as they are set to face off once again in Thunder Bay. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
