Wells plays overtime hero as Bold come back to defeat Gryphons

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team mounted a third period comeback to secure a 4-3 overtime victory against the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

"Tonight was a really valid lesson that most times you probably won't come back, so you don't want to leave yourselves in that situation," said Bold head coach Johnny Duco.

The Bold were looking for a rebound performance after a disappointing matchup on Saturday against the Waterloo Warriors. Meanwhile, the Gryphons returned to OUA hockey after spending the week across the border playing exhibition games against NCAA teams.

The opening period of tonight's matchup featured back-and-forth action between the opposing sides, however, nothing was able to materialize until late in the frame. Gryphons forward Luke Bignell tapped in a pass from Ted Nichol, who was below the goal line, to give Guelph the lead heading into the intermission.

"It was us overworking instead of simplifying it, taking our man and doing our job. We were overdoing it," said Duco.

In the second frame, the Bold came out with more intensity in search of the equalizer. However, Guelph continue to pile it on, eventually doubling their lead after a wrister from Ted McGeen went past Bold netminder Kai Edmonds. Three minutes later, the Gryphons found their third of the night with a goal from Luke Kutkevicius.

"We didn't play to their level in the beginning, but we proved it last year that we could come back in the third," said Bold captain Jesse Barwell.

Nonetheless, the Bold resurgence was on in the final frame. Kevin Gursoy started things with a goal to make it 3-1 with 17:51 left in the frame. Shortly after, Barwell cut the lead in half with a backhand shot off a rebound Cregan could not control.

"I just saw [Patrick Fellows] shoot it and the puck came to my backhand," said Barwell. "I was like 'just get this on the net as fast as possible,' and luckily the goalie wasn't there."

Following that, defenceman Elijah Roberts scored the tying goal for the Bold with 9:21 remaining in the period after he threw a backhander on net that snuck past Cregan.  The tie held and the game went into overtime.

"I was actually thinking to go upstairs on the goalie and catch him by surprise, so I just threw it on the net and saw it just trickle in," said Roberts. "After that, it was the energy in the air. Whether it be regulation or overtime, we were going to find a way to win this game."

In the extra frame, Bold defenceman Ryan Wells was sprung on a breakaway alongside Kyle Bollers after a turnover at the Gryphons' blue line.

"In practice, he scores a lot on breakaways," said Roberts. "I had no doubt that he was going to score."

The Mississauga, Ont. native then made a nifty move going bar-down on Cregan to secure the victory.

"I don't even remember too much. You kind of just blackout a bit," said Wells. "It's just the same move I always do."

"I just jumped in the air screaming, 'Oh my god, let's go!' It's exciting," said Bollers.

TMU now looks ahead to a three-game road trip which begins against the Brock Badgers in a rematch of last year's Queen's Cup semifinal on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 4:00 p.m.

"We're excited. It's going to be a big game. It's going to be a really big test for us," said Duco. " If we do the things that make us successful, we could beat anyone in this league."
