Warriors knock off Bold with third period comeback

TORONTO - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's hockey team suffered their first loss of the season Saturday night, falling 2-1 to the visiting Waterloo Warriors.

Waterloo would get the better of the Bold for most of the match, cashing through on their opportunities as the night played out.

The common theme so far this season for the Bold has been explosive offence from the group, both often and early. The trend continued for the blue and gold in their Saturday night affair against the Warriors, putting a dent in the scoreboard within the opening minutes of play.

First-year forward Will Portokalis became the most recent rookie to ink his name on the scoresheet this season, taking a pass in tight of the Warriors goal before sliding home the game's initial marker.

Head coach Johnny Duco praised the rookie's performance offensively, mentioning just how great of an add the Mississauga native has been for the group this season.

By the time the period reached its midway mark, the Bold heavily led the Warriors in dangerous looks, while keeping the visitors' power play at bay.

In spite of their pedestrian start to the game, Waterloo greeted the second stanza with a flurry of attacks, one of which ringing off the crossbar before landing out of play.

Goaltender Garrett Forrest played a crucial role in keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard throughout the period. The fifth-year netminder swallowed all nine opposing shots, stretching the width of the goal to keep a dangerous wrap-around attempt from crossing the goal line.

The Bold's lead would remain intact throughout the middle stanza as the Warriors were unsuccessful in capitalizing on their momentum.

That fortune would all change for the visitors to kick off the third, with the group striking in quick, convincing fashion to stun the Bold off the hop.

The Warriors would strike twice, less than seven minutes apart, to completely flip the scoreboard in their favor. Jack Phibbs scored the tying goal on a deflection before Jacob Casganette tallied the game-winner minutes later.

"We weren't able to get that jump back in our step," said head coach Johnny Duco after the game. "We deserved to lose."

The group would later spoil the Bold's best chance at salvaging a point in the final minutes of the frame, with forward Chase Campbell rushing back to break off a 2-on-0 chance featuring a pair of TMU's most lethal weapons in Kyle Bollers and Jesse Barwell

The Bold will look to bounce back from the heartbreaking loss on Wednesday when the Guelph Gryphons roll into town. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
