Bold stay hot, extend win streak to eight in tight contest with Gaels

KINGSTON - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold men's soccer team continued their win streak with a 1-0 victory against the Queen's Gaels at Richardson Stadium on Friday.

Tonight's win versus the Gaels extended the Bold's unbeaten run to eight games in which they secured all 24 points up for grabs and ensures they have a first-round bye heading into the playoffs.

The Bold began the first half in control by retaining the majority of possession and turning it into offensive pressure. TMU forward Ameer Kinani broke the ice for the Bold as he opened up the game's scoring at the 37th minute mark with his fourth strike in two games.

The Toronto native took advantage of a collision outside the Queen's goal between Gaels goalkeeper Manuel Dirube and defender Nick Alie Day. Kinani was then able to pot the loose ball into the open net to give TMU the lead.

"I was very happy to score the winning goal today to help my team secure the first-round bye for the playoffs," said Kinani.

In the second half, Bold netminder Ali Ghazanfari had to be sharp as the Gaels picked up the pace and began to threaten near the 18-yard box. Nonetheless, the Stouffville, Ont. native stood tall to keep the Bold ahead as he stopped the only shot on goal he faced throughout the match.

The win gives the Bold 27 points and leaves them second in the OUA East standings. They now look ahead to their game on Sunday afternoon against the Carleton Ravens in the nation's capital.

A victory against the Ravens combined with an Ontario Tech Ridgebacks loss against the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday would put the Bold in a tie for first place in the division. The tie would have to be broken by OUA's general tie-breaking procedure.

The Bold's match on Sunday is set to kick off at 3:15 p.m. at TAAG Park in Ottawa.
