Bold top Blues in 2-1 home-opener

TORONTO - The Bold men's hockey team improved their record to 3-0 after a 2-1 win in their home opener against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

Head coach Johnny Duco attributed part of the victory to rookie goalkeeper Kai Edmonds, who made 27 saves throughout the night, allowing only one goal.

The rest of the team, he added, has stepped up on both ends of the ice.

"The guys have really bought into playing tough, hard nose hockey and attention to detail on the defensive side," he said. "And our forwards are working their butts off, back checking and doing their part as well."

The coach also emphasized the team's family atmosphere. "One thing we've really talked about is we're going to need all 18 skaters, and everyone pulling on that rope together. Good teams find a way to win, we don't let each other down."

Jackson Doherty opened the scoring in the second period off a breakaway goal, after a scoreless first period where the Bold dominated in shots and control on the ice.

"When I got the puck there on the blue line, I thought, 'What am I gonna do once I get down?' so my first thought was shot," Doherty said. "He's a big goalie, so I just kind of did what my instincts told me to do and put it from my forehand to my back hand."

Five minutes later, Kevin Gursoy scored a second breakaway goal to extend the lead to two.

In the third, Toronto's Nicholas Wong scored a last minute goal with four minutes left in the game, but the Blues couldn't find the equalizer.

The Bold will be back on the ice on Saturday, when they face the Waterloo Warriors at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m. and you can watch live in-person or online at OUA.tv.
