Santos notches first hat trick, Bold beat Gaels

TORONTO — For the second straight day, an offensive output powered the Toronto Metropolitan Bold men's soccer team to victory as they defeated the Queen's Gaels 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at Downsview Park.

Justin Santos's three goal effort led the way for the Bold, as he recorded the team's third hat trick of the weekend — following in the footsteps of Sean Fafinski and Zakaria Abdi who accomplished the feat in Saturday's victory.

Santos' three goals all came in the game's first half. The second-year Toronto product converted on a pair of pretty passing plays from Luca Di Marco and Faisal Ghaffur, respectively, before scoring the third in style off of a perfectly exectued set piece just before halftime.

"Justin is a player with a lot of potential. If he plays up to it, he can do things like that. He had a really good week of training and played well. He played to his potential — nothing more and nothing less," said Bold head coach, Fil Prostran.

"It definitely felt good," said Santos. "I couldn't have done it without my teammates giving me passes and crosses. We all played well together. We finished our chances and then we got the result we wanted."

Tristan Marshall joined Santos in the multi-goal game club with a pair, Brandon Barone recorded his first goal of the season, while Fafinski rounded out the scoring as he added to his weekend goal total as he curled a corner kick off the post and in.

After yesterday's convincing victory over the RMC Paladins, today's win put a close on a successful six-point weekend for the Bold. The weekend sweep — in which they outscored their opponents 22-1 —  improved TMU's record to 4-2 and moved them into a tie for third place in the OUA East division.

"To be honest, it was really unexpected. I didn't expect it to go this way. But you know these things happen sometimes," said Prostran, when asked about the weekend dominance. "The guys really came to play today — really focused. What I call 'the fight of the game' — I think we really brought that this weekend and finished our chances. It was a group effort. We played everybody on the roster. Everyone contributed. I think that's a sign of a good team — to have depth and when people come off the bench, the level stays the same. It was a team win for sure."

Prostran is hoping for more of the same on Thursday night at Downsview Park, when the Bold kick off a home-and-home with the crosstown rival Toronto Varsity Blues. With Thursday's meeting being the Bold's final home game this regular season it will serve as the team's senior night, as the program honours their upcoming graduates.

"Last year, I thought we lost some great seniors with Abdallah (El-Chanti), Praveen (Ahilan), Mohammad (Abdallah) and all the rest. But this year even more so -- Fez, Sean, Christian, Ali, Oliver, Kai and I know I'm missing some more. There have been lots of special moments with them, so it's going to be nice to celebrate them," said Prostran.

The match also has significant playoff implications, as the Varsity Blues sit equal with the Bold with 12 points.

"We've got a great rivalry over the past handful of years," said Prostran. "It's going to be tight. It's always tight. It's always close to them. They're a well organized, good coached team. You'll see — it'll be a one goal game here or there. I hope it goes like this weekend, but I highly doubt it."

"Rivalry games — we love those games. It's going to be a gritty game. But we just got to fight hard, bring the same fight we always bring and get the result," said Santos.

Kick off on Thursday night between the Bold and Varsity Blues is scheduled for 7:15 p.m at Downsview Park. The pair of programs will then do battle at Varsity Stadium in the second half of the home and home on Saturday afternoon.
