Lashley's strike help Bold gain point in stormy affair against Lakers

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team secured a point with an early second-half goal from forward Journey Lashley in a draw against the Nipissing Lakers on a rainy Sunday afternoon in North Bay.

The first half began evenly as both teams sought the opening goal. Midway through the first 45 minutes, the Lakers had the first scoring opportunity but could not convert. Nipissing forward Jennifer Mulligan had a strike, however, the ball ended up going over the Bold's net.

Shortly after, TMU had a chance of their own as forward Ivymae Perez nearly found her sixth goal of the season. A series of quick passes found the Toronto native alone in the Lakers' box, yet the forward put the ball just wide of the Lakers' goal.

Late in the first frame, the weather promptly became harsh when the referee's whistle neared. A downpour of rain and hail covered the players of both squads requiring the half to be called early.

When the players returned to the field, they played out the remainder of the first half before switching sides, yet the game remained scoreless.

Nonetheless, the blue and gold kept pushing for the go-ahead strike and less than 30 seconds into the second half, they found what they were looking for.

Following a defensive miscue by the Lakers, forced by a press from TMU forward Enoyaa Acheampong, the ball found the right foot of Journey Lashley after a few swift touches. Lashley converted on the chance in the box to put the Bold ahead by one.

As the game went on, Nipissing put more players forward to find the equalizer. Late in the match, in the 83rd minute, the Lakers' tactics resulted in the tying goal. Midfielder Jessica Emerton tapped in the goal past Bold goalkeeper Abby Harrison

Despite the late push from each side, the game ended in a draw. Both teams escaped the rainy affair with a point in the standings.

TMU continue their five-game road trip tomorrow afternoon against the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury, Ont. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
