Rams stay undefeated heading into 2022 with win over Gaels

The No. 8 Rams basketball team grabbed a convincing 71-62 win over the No. 10 Gaels on Saturday evening at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, heading into the new year with a 6-0 record.

Gaels forward Julia Chadwick led all scorers with 20 points, but it was a collection of Rams players getting into double-figure scoring that led to the win, with Rachel Farwell scoring a team-high of 16 points.

The Rams looked overwhelmingly strong on the defensive end in the opening quarter, forcing six Queen's turnovers and scoring nine points off of them. The blue and gold led 19-11 going into the second quarter.

The second quarter was a competitive one, with the Gaels finding answers with good ball movement and active hands on defense. Queen's strung together a 5-0 run to end the half and found themselves down only 33-26.

With little change of pace in the third quarter, the game continued to be played quickly and the Rams continued to find ways to hold on to a comfortable lead. In her first home game since her return to health, two-time OUA All-Star Jama Bin-Edward played a significant role tonight for the Rams and in the third quarter especially, making crucial drives and using her length to be disruptive.

"She adds another level of dynamic play", said Rams head coach Carly Clarke after tonight's game. "Defensively she's so disruptive and offensively she's another threat and we've got a lot of threats", she added.

"It feels really good to be back", said Bin-Edward on her first game back at the Mattamy in almost two years, "it's been a long road to get here."

Despite the Gaels grabbing seven to the Rams' zero offensive rebounds in the third quarter, Bin-Edward and the Rams still managed to outscore the Gaels in that period, going up 53-44 heading into the final quarter.

With the Rams holding onto their lead to earn a 71-62 victory, Clarke was happy with the victory over a tough Gaels squad, with the win being more convincing then their comeback win over them in their home opener.

"We executed our game plan really well, and seeing that translate over a really good team feels great and something we want to build on over the break for sure," she voiced.

Heading into tonight's matchup, it was clear that the Gaels play a very similar style of play as the Rams, with multiple small-ball lineup and a focus on three-point shooting, but the Rams were able to flex their defensive muscles on the floor and tamed a typically fiery Gaels offence.

The Rams will be back in OUA competition against the undefeated, No. 5 Ottawa Gee-Gees in a double-header in the nation's capital on January 14-15, 2022.
