Game Recap: Hockey (W) | | Joe Mastromatteo

Rams force overtime but fall in Toronto thriller

TORONTO - The poised Rams women's hockey team refused to go down in regulation Friday night, forcing overtime against the No. 2 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues before falling 3-2.

Down 2-0 entering the third, a pair of goals by Brooklyn Gemmill and Lauren Nicholson tied the game with just two minutes remaining. Both teams flew by in the ensuing 3-on-3 overtime, though a skilled rush up the ice saw Toronto take the win.

Head coach Lisa Haley was nevertheless proud of the Rams' comeback effort. "It did fall short. But that doesn't mean that we didn't play well, I thought it was probably one of our better games of the semester. So it's a good note to end on in terms of performance and process."

A tight checking opening half of the frame saw both teams trade chances. A trickling puck nearly snuck by Rachel Seeley, but it was clubbed away by Abby DeCorby in the crease. Later that shift, DeCorby was called for body checking.

Though the Rams have sported a sturdy penalty kill, a giveaway led to a quick passing play converted by noted Rams foe Taylor Trussler, making it 1-0.

The Blues killed off the Rams' first power play at the start of the second when Alexia Ursua was soon sent to the box for tripping.

However, it was Madison Lalonde who had the best chance as she forced Toronto's Erica Fryer to make a pair of stops off a shorthanded rush. The captain was given a warm welcome on the bench after the successful penalty kill, including a tap on the head from Erika Crouse.

"I think we had a really good comeback," said Crouse post-game. "I think that we're an underdog. It was a really good effort by the team."

Though Seeley continued to keep the Rams in the game, a bounce off a skate sprang Toronto's Celine Frappier and Juliette Blais-Savoie in the last minute of the second. Frappier slung it past Seeley's diving pad to send the Blues up 2-0 heading into the third.

After a slow start to the third, Gemmill struck to make it 2-1. A routine dump into the zone was quickly centred by Savannah Bouzide. Gemmill flicked it into the top corner with grace before celebrating her way to the Rams' bench.

As the clock ticked down, eyes were on Seeley being pulled for the extra attacker. A flip from the Rams' zone by Gemmill then found a darting Nicholson, who went in alone on a breakaway. The sniper made no mistake tying it at two, sending Varsity Arena into a frenzy.

In a back-and-forth extra frame, Seeley continued to thwart Toronto's chances. However, a tired group of Rams was caught on a 3-on-1 rush halfway through overtime. Another keen passing play was finished by Toronto's Trussler, as the Blues won 3-2.

After a thrilling end to their fall season, the Rams are back in action for a jam-packed January, with eight games fitting into the month to kick off 2022.
