Rams cruise to road win in season opener over No. 8 Lions

NORTH YORK, Ont. - In a rink with blaringly loud acoustics, it was the Rams' bench which cheered the most as they soared to a 4-1 win on Friday at York.

The Lions, nationally ranked eighth, struggled to sustain any momentum against the tenth-ranked Rams.

The Rams banged their sticks as newcomers Savannah Bouzide, Jamie Watson, and Megan Breen joined Lauren Nicholson and Avery Horlock for the season's opening faceoff.

The line was immediately dangerous, with Horlock's long strides forcing York's Julianna Thompson to make an early pad save off a 2-on-1 rush.

Olivia Giardetti drew a hooking call six minutes into the game, giving the Rams' power-play their first chance to shine. Showing no signs of special teams rust, Nicholson was left a lane from the point and wristed it in to make it 1-0.

The Lions pelted the Rams early in the second, forcing Brooklyn Gemmill to extend a leg to block a point shot. The forward had no trouble springing back up to clear the puck as the Rams defended their lead.

After getting called for tripping herself earlier in the period, Horlock earned a power play with ten minutes to go. Late in the player-advantage, Gemmill found a rebound off a hard shot from Bouzide. She chipped it over Thompson's pad to extend the Rams' lead to two.

Meanwhile, a wandering puck at the beginning of the third period reached Madison Davey alone in front. Rams netminder Rachel Seeley had little chance as she slotted it in to make it 2-1.

However, just a minute later, Brooke Michaud rushed the post and scored off a scramble to restore the two-goal lead. The tally marked her first OUA goal.

"It felt good," said a poised Michaud post-game. "I look forward to contributing where I can."

Emily Baxter soon made it 4-1 with a laser of a shot. Baxter also had an assist earlier in the night.

Despite a two-player advantage late in the frame, the final buzzer went with the score at 4-1.

Coach Haley Irwin commended the Lions ahead of tomorrow's rematch. "They were a good team too, they made a lot of good plays." With such a dominant performance tonight, she looks to repeat their success. "We're going to stick to our strengths tomorrow."

Puck drop back on Mattamy Home Ice is set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Spectators are able to attend with protocols in place, but require a ticket.
