Rams double up York in home opener win

TORONTO - Less than 24 hours after a confident road win over York, the Rams treated fans at Mattamy Home Ice to a decisive 4-2 win over the Lions on Saturday afternoon.

Just a minute and a half into the game, the Rams were on the board. An innocent point shot from Keelin Farren was redirected by a darting Brooklyn Gemmill and it snuck by York's Julianna Thomson.

After hemming York in the zone thanks to some smooth skating by Erika Crouse, Emily Baxter found Abby DeCorby alone at the point. The defender snapped a shot that ricocheted in off the post. The 2-0 goal was DeCorby's first as a Ram.

Despite outshooting the Lions for most of the period, York caught up on a late power play. Rachel Seeley made a series of saves off of a backhand and a redirect, but the Lions eventually cut the lead in half. A cross-crease pass found Courtney Gardiner in the left circle, who slung it in to send the Rams into the intermission up 2-1.

Midway through the second, Olivia Giardetti and Savannah Bouzide forced a turnover from a tired group of Lions. Lauren Nicholson walked down the slot and rifled it glove side to restore the two-goal lead.

A few minutes later, Bouzide led the way on a 2-on-1 rush. After her initial shot was stopped, Nicholson cashed in the rebound for her second of the night to make it 4-1.

In the third, defensive play prevailed, with each goalie called on to make some stops. Later in the game, a puck was poked loose from a scrum and found York's Sydney Paulson, who powered it past Seeley to make it 4-2.

Some goal posts and late-game play with an empty net came to no avail, and the Rams walked off the ice with a smile and the 4-2 victory.

Coach Haley Irwin commended the Rams' leaders, like Nicholson and Seeley. "We need that (leadership) from them. We need them to lead in all aspects. They're excited to be here after COVID. We're relying on them to help us and for them to lead the way."

Meanwhile, Bouzide's first two regular season OUA games have already seen her rack up four assists. "I think I have a pass-first mentality. Maybe I have to be a little bit more selfish to get the first monkey off my back," she said with a smile. "We played really good this weekend. Hopefully we can keep it going. I'm starting to get my feet under (myself) now," added Bouzide.

The Rams have a well-earned weekend off next week before facing other inner-city rival Toronto on November 19th at home. They will look to keep up their momentum and maintain their spot near the top of the OUA East division.
