Lakers hand Rams second straight loss in North Bay

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Rams women's volleyball team fell short in a 3-0 loss (13-25, 14-25, 18-25) to the now 5-1 Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon, their second loss of the doubleheader weekend in North Bay.

Lakers middle blocker Megan Winter and outside hitter Shayla Kessler shared a game-high in kills with seven each, while middles Katelyn Grasman and Ashley Ditchfield led the Rams with six each.

The first set looked to be a unique approach by the Rams, as they started usual outside hitter Zoe Kuck at libero, and middle blocker Dakari Gennaro on her OUA debut. From the start, it was clear that the Nipissing had one of the top ranked defences in the province, as they barely let any Rams attacks drop and answered well enough to take the first set 25-13.

To begin the second set, a series of big Kessler swings forced the Rams to take a quick time out trailing 0-4. Out of the timeout, it was the Rams middles who picked up the slack as Grasman and Ditchfield tallied a series of blocks and kills to bring the Rams down only one at 6-7. The Lakers were once again full of answers however, as Kessler came up with a few huge blocks that kept the momentum in the Lakers' favour as they took the set 25-14.

The third set saw Lakers outside hitter Shaelyn Francis come up big on the blocks as she led Nipissing to a 16-8 lead at the technical timeout. Out of the break, it was Rams libero/outside hitter Alisa Gavva making her OUA debut and providing a significant spark. With three straight serves with two being aces, the Lakers called a timeout as they lead 18-13. Out of the timeout, Gavva continued to provide energy with another ace and a few more strong plays in the backcourt, making it just 18-15 for Nipissing.

In the end, another Lakers run proved to be too much for the Rams as they took the final set 25-18.

The Rams attempting more attacks than the Lakers in a 3-0 loss speaks to the impressive abilities of the Nipissing defence, as well as their efficiency on the attack. When the Rams elevated their play in the third set, the Lakers logged in 14 kills with just three errors on 24 attempts, giving the Rams no chance for a comeback.

With this being the final match of a tough fall semester for the Rams, going 0-6 with five of those matches being on the road, they will be back on home court on January 15th, 2022 taking on the Trent Excalibur.
