Men's volleyball falls to undefeated Lakers

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Rams men's volleyball team once again fell 3-0 to the undefeated Nipissing Lakers in North Bay for the second straight match on Saturday evening.

The Lakers, who are yet to lose a set this season after six games played, were led by Patrick Hebert and outside hitter Jackson Young who each had nine kills. Jacob Walker led all Rams in kills with nine.

Tonight's first set was similar to the final set of last night's affair in North Bay, where the Rams and Lakers went toe-to-toe and kept the score tight the entire way. With an opening set full of short points and errors on both ends, highlighted by the Rams' nine service errors, the Lakers held on to their slim lead and took the opening set 25-22.

With a similar level of competitiveness to begin the second set, the Lakers soon pulled away as they went on a 3-0 run to lead 16-10 at the technical timeout. With the Lakers continuing their run out of the break, including a euphoric block by Lakers setter Josh Nicholson to force a Rams timeout at 20-12, the lead was too large to close as the Rams fell 25-16 in the second set.

The third and final set was a dominant one by the Lakers, who convincingly held on to their lead throughout the set hitting at a .421 efficiency to the Rams' .154. Offensively, the Lakers proved to be too lethal as they cruised to a 25-17 third set win.

Regarding the Lakers offence, it was no surprise that outside hitter Young, the OUA leader in points and second highest kills per set hitter, caused the Rams problems. Despite the Rams creating more attacks than the Lakers in their 3-0 loss, they hit at just a .097 efficiency while the Lakers hit at .387.

The Rams finish the first half of their season with a 1-5 record, with all five losses coming on the road and their only win being their only home match this semester.

The blue and gold will be back in the new year as they take on the Trent Excalibur at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on January 15, 2022.
