Game Recap: Volleyball (M) | | Joe Mastromatteo

Rams' hot start falls short in five set loss to York

TORONTO - The Rams men's volleyball squad quickly stole the first two sets on Friday night, but fell 3-2 to the York Lions at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

Jacob Walker kept the red and white Lions on their toes all night, slamming down 15 kills.

Both teams went point for point before the first technical, though each side had over five service errors as they shook off rust from the break.

After a Ben Davey ace, errors continued to pile up for York as six subsequent points were awarded to the Rams to give them the first set 25-19.

The second started similarly to the first, though the Lions came out with a brief two point lead thanks to strong offence from Andrew Tauhid.

However, Walker continued to dominate while Omari Young and Nicholas Hudson added two kills of their own, including back-to-back attacks by Young. Meanwhile Alex King protected the Rams' net with a strong block.

The Rams soon had no trouble taking the second set 25-18.

Walker and Tauhid traded kills in the third set, though the Rams' offence cooled down. The Lions' surge propelled them to take the third set 25-17.

The Rams struggled to tie the fourth set, but finally evened things at 17 after the technical. A strong kill by Young even gave the Rams a 20-19 lead, but a rally from York sent things to five sets as they won 25-21.

Three quick points to start the fifth set by York set the tone for the rest of the game. Although the Rams climbed back from a five-point deficit to make it 14-13, a lofty serve went out-of-bounds to award the Lions the game.

The Rams will look to rebound tomorrow night as they step on to home court for the first time since November. First serve against the Lions flies at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
