Lakers edge out Rams in close, scrappy battle

TORONTO - The Nipissing Lakers out-worked the Rams on Saturday evening as they split this week's home-and-away series, handing the blue and gold a 3-1 loss.

Brookyln Gemmill scored her third goal of the campaign, while Savannah Bouzide added her fifth assist on the Rams' lone goal.

The Rams hit the ice energized in their new white jerseys, but were on the penalty kill early after an Olivia Giardetti tripping call.

Later in the frame, a swift move at the point by Lauren Nicholson saw her ding a power play shot firmly off the crossbar but back out into play.

Rachel Seeley kept things scoreless through 20 after fighting off back-to-back slapshots, a redirect, and a slot shot while down on her Rams crest in the crease.

After a disputed tripping call on Erika Crouse was killed off, Laker Malory Dominico forced a puck through Seeley on a scrum to break the scoreless tie.

The Rams were perfect on the penalty kill, snuffing out all five Nipissing chances. They had their own set of power play struggles, however, as the Rams went 0-for-6.

"Our power play was a good example: the urgency just seemed to be missing, we were certainly missing a little bit of hunger," said head coach Lisa Haley post game.

Two minutes after Dominico's goal and with just 20 seconds to go, Gemmill scooped a nifty backhander past Nipissing's Chloe Marshall to even it up. After Bouzide narrowly beat a Laker defender, she made a diving cross-crease pass to the trailing Gemmill. The forward left Marshall little chance as she went forehand to backhand and lifted it over her pad.

Despite Nipissing doubling up the Rams in shots 22-11, the second period ended 1-1.

Early in the third, the Lakers were tasked with killing a five minute power play after Kara Den Hoed checked Brooke Michaud into the boards. Den Hoed was also given a game misconduct.

With a minute left in the lengthy player-advantage, Nipissing's Emma Neff managed to send a deflected puck past Seeley, making it 2-1 shorthanded before proceeding to finish off the penalty kill.

"That five minute advantage, I don't know if we got more than one shot on goal. So definitely some missed opportunities," added Haley.

Though Crouse was later stopped point blank in the slot and Gemmill drew another penalty, the Lakers slotted an empty netter to seal it 3-1.

Avery Horlock, who hit the post today and put up two points against the Lakers last Wednesday, commended Nipissing's work ethic.

"I think they're a hard working team. I think we out-battled them (Wednesday). But today, we just didn't win the battles. We had some tough bounces," said the winger.

The Rams will look to get back in the win column as they close out their fall season on the road against the Toronto Varsity Blues next Friday, December 3.
