Speedy Rams hand Lakers first loss

NORTH BAY, Ont. - In their first road trip outside of the Greater Toronto Area this season, the Rams triumphantly beat the undefeated Nipissing Lakers 4-1 on Wednesday evening.

After falling to Toronto last week the Rams were poised to get back into the win column from the opening faceoff. It took until the dying minutes of the first when Avery Horlock used her speed to strip the puck from a Laker defender. After continuing down the wing, she slid a sharp pass across to captain Madison Lalonde, who shoveled it in for her first of the season.

Nipissing, nationally ranked fifth in the country by U SPORTS, flew around their home ice in the second period as they attempted to equalize. They relied on goalie Chantelle Sandquist, who came up big after some chances in the slot for the Rams. However, Rachel Seeley and her blue and gold pads did their part for the Rams, including a quick save halfway through the frame.

The Rams' offence heated up in the third. Off of a seemingly innocent breakout into the zone, Emily Baxter found the puck in the slot. A quick shot flew over Sandquist's glove, sending the Rams into celebration as they went up 2-0.

Moments later, Erika Crouse got the proverbial monkey off of her back, netting her first of the season on a breakaway. After chasing down the puck in the neutral zone, the Laker defender failed to catch up as Crouse roofed a nifty backhander to make it 3-0.

Late in the game, Nipissing's Brianna Gaffney broke Seeley's shutout when a play went the opposite way. Though the Rams were caught flat footed, an empty-netter moments later by Horlock restored the three goal lead at 4-1.

After the clock hit zero at Nipissing's Memorial Gardens, the Rams celebrated a total team win. They outshot the Lakers 28-23 while keeping their power play scoreless on three attempts. Seeley and the Rams' defence also came up big against some of the OUA's top attackers.

Nipissing visits Mattamy Home Ice this Saturday to complete the home-and-away series. The game is also the final home game of the fall schedule, with puck drop at 4:00 p.m.
