No. 8 Rams cruise past Ridgebacks

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Rams women's basketball team took down the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 78-38 in the first game of this week's doubleheader in Oshawa.

The Rams progress to a 4-0 start to their season in a collectively dominant performance, while the Ridgebacks fall to a 1-6 start to their campaign.

To open the match, the Rams saw two quick three-pointers from guard Marin Scotten, and went up 9-4 in the opening few minutes. With an even stronger finish to the first quarter thanks to a flurry of buckets in the final 90 seconds, the Rams sat with a comfortable 21-8 lead after the opening quarter.

The visiting blue and gold continued to press the Ridgebacks, forcing five turnovers in the second quarter on top of moving the ball quickly on offence. These turnovers are what caused the Rams to have such a large field goal advantage in the half, shooting 34 field goal attempts to Ontario Tech's 25. Off the bench, Rams guard Eve Uwayesu provided a spark by scoring seven points in just 11 minutes in the first half. The Rams had doubled the Ridgebacks' points at the end of the half, leading 42-21.

A common trend so far this season for the Rams has been their dominant third quarters, and that trend certainly continued as they outscored the Ridgebacks 21-3 in the third, including a 21-0 run to open it. With this season's leading scorer for the Rams Mikeala Dodig scoring just two points after the first 30 minutes, the Rams picked up the pieces on all fronts with nine different scorers in the quarter. The Rams led 63-24 with 10 minutes remaining.

Despite the scoring being fairly even in the fourth quarter, the Rams kept a hold of their convincing lead with their relentless energy and scoring off the bench. In the end, the Rams secured their second 40-point win of the season at 78-38 and continue to look like a team destined to climb the national rankings.

While starters Rachel Farwell and Scotten led all Rams scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively, it was very much a team effort that gave them such a lead. Most notably, it was forward Jayme Foreman and guard Uwayesu who came off the bench and provided nine points each on efficient shooting.

With eight three-pointers made to Ontario Tech's one, the Rams also continue to show why they are regarded as the best shooting team in the OUA.

The Rams will be back in Oshawa on Saturday, tipping off at 6 p.m in the second game of their double-header against the Ridgebacks.
