Rams set to face top seed Gee-Gees in playoff rematch Wednesday

TORONTO - The Rams women's soccer team is headed to the postseason for the second straight season and will be taking on the No. 3 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees, the same team that eliminated the Rams in 2019's OUA quarter-final.

The Rams earned a place in this year's quarter-final of the 2021 OUA playoffs with a win this past Sunday against the McMaster Marauders, who finished the season level in points with the Rams, but the Rams going ahead with a head-to-head tiebreaker advantage.

After starting the season with a 1-3 record, the Rams showcased an outstanding attitude and discipline in the final six games of the season, going undefeated and pulling out four wins and two draws while only conceding three goals in those fixtures.

Looking ahead to the Gee-Gees, the Rams will be faced with the challenging task of cracking one of the top defensive lines in the province, while taming Ottawa's top scoring offence in the province.

Regarding Ottawa's front-line, the Gee-Gees will likely look to play through fifth-year striker Emma Lefebvre who lead the league in points with 12 goals and three assists. The Gee-Gees midfield most notably consists of first-year Sadie Sider-Echenberg who tallied four assists this season.

However, as of late, the Rams defence has looked as strong as ever with two consecutive clean sheets to close out the season against an otherwise high-scoring McMaster side.

The Rams backline is one with an abundance of experience, with centrebacks Emily Porteous and Sam Naus, fullbacks Keira Kent and Kaleigh McKye, along with goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula each displaying their quality throughout this season as veteran players.

Going forward, although the Rams have struggled with scoring a high number of goals, their forwards pose a constant threat with their speed and play-making ability.

The speed and aggression of Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene has been a headache for opposing defences all season, and with her scoring the game-winning goal this past Sunday, she will surely be looked upon to create another spark against Ottawa.

The Rams will head to the nation's capital this Wednesday, November 3, to face the Gee-Gees on Matt Anthony Field at 7:00 p.m. Should the Rams knock off the top seeded Gee-Gees, they would face the winner of the quarter-final between Queen's and Guelph.
