TORONTO—The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women's soccer team opened its 2026 season with an early test, taking on the reigning OUA champion University of Toronto (U of T) Varsity Blues.

After battling back from an early deficit to level the score, the Bold fell short when U of T found a late game-winning goal to secure a 2-1 victory.

A new season brings fresh nerves, especially when beginning the season on the road against the defending champions.

"We knew coming into this game it was gonna be tough," said Bold head coach John Yacou. "Regardless if they lost key players or seniors that graduated, they're champions, and champions have that mindset."

U of T came out with energy, forcing the Bold into their own half and making it difficult for TMU to establish an offensive rhythm.

"We expected them to potentially have the ball more than we will, so we knew we would be under some type of pressure," said Yacou.

Despite this early pressure, Bold defender Vanessa Pianata didn't stray away from the ball, challenging the Varsity Blues' offence.

An early TMU foul gave U of T a free kick, but the Varsity Blues couldn't capitalize. The Bold then attempted to generate offensive pressure, though U of T's defence held firm. 

The Varsity Blues eventually broke through in the 13th minute. After a rebound fell into the sightline of Emilijia Lucic, U of T gained an early 1-0 lead.

The Bold continued to try and put together some offence, not allowing the early goal to discourage them. Striker Taylor Fazzari pressed the Varsity Blues' backline in hopes of producing a scoring opportunity. 

The Bold's efforts paid off when they were awarded a corner kick. Natalie Moynihan sent the ball into the box, where U of T's goalkeeper couldn't get a firm grip. The rebound fell to midfielder Mera Saleh, who found the back of the net for an equalizer. 

"We all worked very hard for the goal," said Saleh. "A team goal."

What began as a game controlled by the Varsity Blues had become an evenly matched battle at 1-1.

With both teams on the scoresheet, they each held confidence. The possession shifted back and forth, neither side giving the other an inch.
 
U of T nearly regained the lead in first-half stoppage time on a breakaway. Bold goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci made the initial save before the Varsity Blues found the rebound. Pianata, however, was there to clear the ball away from the net. The game went into halftime still deadlocked 1-1.

The Varsity Blues came out attacking once again in the second half. U of T's persistence, however, was met with TMU's strong defence. 

The Bold's high-energy defensive pursuits later produced a foul, giving the Varsity Blues another free kick. Paolucci came up with a key stop, diving to keep the score level. 

As the match got deeper, both teams grew increasingly determined to find the go-ahead goal. A U of T foul gave TMU a free-kick opportunity, but Moynihan's attempt shot high over the net.

Following, the Bold pushed at the front line, but the Varsity Blues replied with aggressive play, wanting to regain control. U of T received a free kick in the Bold's end, but TMU shut down any scoring opportunities.

In the final minutes, TMU looked to maintain possession and hold off the Varsity Blues. Yet, with just one minute remaining in regulation, U of T found their game-winning goal off a corner kick. 

The Bold made one final push in added time, but the Varsity Blues held on to secure their 2-1 victory.

Despite the heartbreaking finish, TMU left the field encouraged by their performance against the defending OUA champions.

"There's a lot of positives to take out of today, and we know what we have now," said Paolucci.

Saleh, who scored the Bold's sole goal of the match, shared a similar sentiment: "Obviously, it was a loss and that always hurts but we learned a lot of lessons from today and we know we have those pieces."

After proving they can compete with championship-caliber teams, the Bold will look to carry that confidence into the rest of their season.

TMU will head to Oshawa, Ont., to face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in their second game of the weekend.

"It's a fast season, and we have to go again tomorrow, so there's no time to dwell," said Yacou.
