Rams outlast Lakers in second straight road win

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Rams women's basketball team completed a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon against the Nipissing Lakers, winning 67-50.

While the Lakers will have to continue searching for their first win of the season, the Rams move to 3-0 in their campaign.

After an opening Rams three pointer from forward Rachel Farwell, the Lakers went on a 6-0 run to open their scoring and took a 6-3 lead, setting the tone early. With the Lakers playing much better defence than in last night's affair, the Rams only led 17-16 after the first quarter.

The Lakers kept their energy in the second quarter, with guard Devisha Binns leading the Lakers to an 8-0 run as they went up 27-20, forcing a Rams timeout. Out of the break, Rams centre Eleanor Jones lifted the team with a pair of scoring and block plays that started a run that got the Rams to a 31-31 tie at the halftime buzzer.

The Rams certainly picked up their defensive intensity in the third quarter, as the Rams went up 46-38 and forced a Lakers timeout. The Rams closed out the quarter with a Mikaela Dodig and-one drive three point play, taking a 53-41 lead as Dodig led the way with 18 points after three quarters.

The final 10 minutes saw an even higher level of defensive work from the Rams, most notably guards Dodig and Kaillie Hall proving to be too much for the Lakers, who were held to just nine points in the fourth quarter as the Rams took the game 67-50.

The Rams will likely look to be better than their opening half going forward, but their talent and experience proved to outlast the Lakers' momentum in the end.

The Rams will have a bye-week next week before taking on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in a pair of road games on Nov. 24 and 27 at 6 p.m., at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre in Oshawa.
