Rams roll over Lakers with 70-30 win

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Rams women's basketball team secured a convincing 70-30 win over the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night.

Coming into tonight's matchup in North Bay, the Rams were coming off a home opener win over the No. 10 Queen's Gaels to kick off their season, while the Lakers were 0-2 after their weekend in Ottawa against the No. 5 Carleton Ravens.

The Rams came flying out of the gate, taking an early 12-3 lead thanks to a series of early buckets from forward Rachel Farwell. The Lakers could not keep up with the Rams offensively, and struggled to grab rebounds thanks to the presence of Rams forwards Haley Fedick and Jayme Foreman, with Foreman making her OUA debut tonight in North Bay.

The Lakers managed to slow the Rams down in the second quarter however, forcing Rams turnovers and holding them to just eight points. With a 8-7 second quarter score for the Rams, the Lakers managed to make it a 35-15 score heading into halftime.

Despite the Lakers allowing just eight points on their end in the third quarter, the Rams defence was exceptional in the third, allowing just four points to give them a 48-19 lead heading into the fourth. Rams guards Marin Scotten and Stefanija Mrvaljevic were the main disruptors to the Lakers offence, grabbing steals and deflections while not giving the Nipissing guards any space.

The Rams caught fire in the fourth quarter, raining down three pointers as well as more overwhelming defence on the other end. With a defensive intensity even with a significant lead, the Rams relentlessly battled until the final whistle and earned a 70-30 victory.

The blue and gold also remain undefeated against the Lakers in program history, with tonight being the ninth straight win dating back to 2014.

The Rams will look to remain undefeated on the season and the Lakers will continue to search for their first win of the year as they rematch tomorrow at Nipissing's Robert J. Surtees Student Athletic Centre at 2 p.m. Catch the game on OUA.tv and follow along at @ryersonrams and @ramswbb on Twitter.
