Rams look to bounce back against Lakers in doubleheader weekend

TORONTO - The Rams men's soccer team is gearing up for its first doubleheader weekend against divisional leaders Nipissing Lakers.

Coming off a disappointing 1-0 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues this past Saturday, a game that the Rams looked to be the better side, they will be looking to bounce back and re-establish themselves as the top team in the division.

This weekend's opponents are 3-0 so far this season, with two wins coming against the Algoma Thunderbirds, and a significant 3-0 win against the Laurentian Voyageurs that will likely prove to be crucial with playoff implications.

The Lakers offence will likely run through veteran midfielder Jack Collins who has two goals and two assists this season and has taken a team-high of 14 shots on goal.

Nipissing's strongest trait is probably their defence however, as they have only conceded one goal in their first three games thanks to their back line loaded with senior players.

Coming off back-to-back games against Toronto, the Rams have already seen their biggest test this season, and will certainly look to build off the three points they collected on opening day. Against the Blues, it was their defensive organization and capabilities that won them their first game and kept them in the second, with the line being led by veteran goalkeeper Praveen Ahilan.

Finishing their chances in the final third will certainly be on the minds of the Rams as they broke through and created an abundance of chances in both of their games, but were not clinical enough to find any comfort in either.

The Rams will head to North Bay for match day on Friday, a place where they have won 2-1 in each of their last two visits. Despite the Lakers being a usual tough out, the Rams have defeated Nipissing in five straight matchups.

With McMaster dropping a game to Laurentian on Sunday, the Rams will have the chance to be tied or stand alone at the top of the division with two wins this weekend.

Be sure to come out to Downsview Park this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. to support the Rams in their second match against Nipissing. Kickoff will follow the women's soccer game at 12:00 p.m. Health and safety protocols are in place.
