Rams tie Thunderbirds to close series in Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - The Rams women's soccer team tied 1-1 in their second game of the weekend against the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday.

Following their victory the day before, the Rams started out on the pitch looking for another win to close out the weekend. Algoma came out ready to respond, and most of the first half saw even ball possession and equal chances at the net. Both teams managed three shots at goal.

At around 30 minutes into the game, Thunderbird midfielder Leigha Nippard opened the scoring off a penalty kick, giving Algoma a 1-0 lead at the end of the half.

The second half opened with the Rams coming back more aggressive than before, with four shots at the net to Algoma's one. At the one-hour mark, Rams defender Samantha Naus found an opportunity at goal and knocked the ball in, evening the score 1-1.

The Rams and Thunderbirds spent the rest of the half chasing the win. With 10 minutes left, the Rams earned a free kick in a last-minute attempt to take the lead, but it was quickly headed away from the Thunderbirds net and into the centre of the pitch, ending the game right where it started.

Currently standing at fourth in Ontario's central division with a 2-3-1 game record, the Rams will be in Sudbury on Friday for their first of two games against the Laurentian Voyageurs. They'll be heading back home on Sunday to finish the series.

Kickoff on Friday is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
