Rams defeat Thunderbirds to move to top of the division

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - The Rams men's soccer team dominated the pitch in a 6-0 victory against the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday, landing them at the top of the OUA Central division.

Standing now at 15 points with a 5-1 record, this weekend's two-game series in Sault Ste. Marie closed off just the way the Rams needed: with an additional six points to total up to an 11-goal sweep.

The team asserted their dominance as soon as they stepped onto the pitch for kick-off, with Rams forward Zakaria Abdi opening the scoring within the first 15 minutes of the game.

The second goal came from an attempt from midfielder Abdallah El-Chanti and an error from Algoma, when the opposing team shot an own goal and gave the Rams a 2-0 lead. El-Chanti took a last-minute shot from the right flank and the ball bounced off Thunderbird Darius Bailey's leg into the net.

The Rams never allowed for an opportunity at redemption for the opposing team. They stayed stingy with the ball throughout the entire first half, keeping possession of the ball and driving the game away from their own net. While the Rams took seven shots throughout the half, Algoma took one.

Three minutes after the Thunderbirds' own goal, Rams forward Luca Di Marco scored the team's third goal off a rebound shot, followed by midfielder Faisal Ghaffur ripping a beautifully-aimed fourth goal into Algoma's side net. Rams midfielder Sean Fafinski scored the fifth and last goal of the half off a corner kick, making the game 5-0 at the 45-minute mark.

The second half saw the same energy from the Rams as the first, as the team stayed light on their feet and controlled in tight spaces. Despite commendable efforts from Algoma to regain steam at their home pitch as they fought for two more shots at goal (both saved), the Rams' composed passing and clean footwork led them straight to the win, with a final penalty kick goal from Abdi to end the game 6-0.

The Rams will head to Sudbury on Friday to open their series against the Laurentian Voyageurs. Tune in as the Rams play to defend their standing as first in the division in hopes of earning a top-seed playoff berth this season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
