Pair of second half goals lift Rams over Thunderbirds

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – After surrendering a late first half goal, the Rams women's soccer team bounced back with two second half goals to secure their second win of the season on Saturday.

In the first ever meeting between the two teams, the opening 45 minutes was an evenly played half where both teams registered three shots.

In the final moments of the half, Algoma's Mercedes Ryan found just enough space to beat the Rams keeper, Elisa Lapadula, and lift the Thunderbirds to a halftime lead.

Despite giving up the late tally, the Rams came out motivated in the second half and quickly evened the score. In the 49th minute, Vittoria Gallivan connected on an incoming corner kick and headed the ball to the back of the net.

Feeling a boost of confidence, the Rams began to dominate the play with their possession. In the 61st minute Keira Kent found space in the middle and used a beautiful touch to float the ball over the Thunderbirds keeper to lift the Rams into the lead.

Lapadula finished the game with three saves to keep the Thunderbirds at bay in the second half.

The Rams will look to sweep the series on Sunday when the two teams return to the pitch for the second half of their weekend doubleheader 12:00 p.m.
