Lakers sweep weekend series over Rams

TORONTO - The Rams women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the undefeated Nipissing Lakers on Sunday afternoon, dropping their second straight game to the Lakers this weekend.

Despite the sunny weather to kick-off the match at Downsview Park, the Rams conceded early in the seventh minute thanks to a strike by Lakers midfielder Jessica Emmerton.

With the wind behind them, Nipissing continued to press and had a goal disallowed by the flag in the 30th minute, keeping a 1-0 score going into halftime despite their chances created.

The Rams came out strong to start the second half, with pressure and pace and threats coming from forwards Skylar Sheehan-Alleyene and Jade Vyfhuis.

The Lakers got back into the Rams defensive area later in the half, but goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula kept the Rams in the game with a pair of big saves in the 58th minute.

Finally, the floodgates opened for the Lakers as they found the net three more times in the later stages of the game, including a swift finish from midfielder Sabrina Chabot in the 79th minute.

"We're a team that's very tactical and technical that likes to keep the ball on the ground, and they limited our spaces, making it challenging for us," said Rams head coach Natalie Bukovec.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the Rams will be taking on the winless Algoma Thunderbirds in a double-header weekend and will be on the hunt for some much needed points in a playoff push.

"We can't take any program lightly," says Bukovec when asked about the weekend ahead against the Thunderbirds.

The Rams kick off at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Superior Heights in Sault Ste. Marie.
