Game Recap: Basketball (W) | | Leah Diseris

Rams look strong in win over Gryphons

GUELPH, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams visited the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night for their first game of their final road trip of the regular season. The Rams produced a dominant defensive first quarter and were consistent for the rest of the game to come away with an 87-55 road win.

The Rams start off with possession but turned over the ball. That early error would not affect the team and the Rams would come out firing. Stefanija Mrvaljevic (Mississauga, Ont.) would get the first bucket, rushing to the basket for the layup. By the five-minute mark the Rams would be up by 13 points, keeping the Gryphons to just two points. The Rams then went on a 10-3 run with Mrvaljevic leading the way. She would end the quarter with nine points, four more than the entire Gryphons team, who only shot 7.7 percent.

Hayley Robertson (Toronto) would get the Rams going in the second, but the Gryphons would go on a 5-2 run to decrease the lead. Robertson would finish with a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Mrvaljevic would score the first three for the Rams to maintain a steady lead at the five-minute mark. This was the Rams worst quarter as they only put up 13 points compared to Guelph's 21. However, they still held a 38-26 lead going into the half, even after Guelph's Reece Mungar shot a buzzer-beating three.

Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) would open the third with back-to-back three-pointers, one of which came after a pump fake to draw out the defender. Scotten would shoot 100 percent from beyond the arc and lead the team with 25 points. It was clear the second quarter was an anomaly as the Rams continued to dominate in the second half. In the final minutes of the third, Scotten would scramble for the ball, reaching out before it went out of bounds, passing it to an open Robertson, while Guelph's MacKeely Shantz tried to steal the ball but committed the foul instead. The Rams would go into the fourth with a 61-38 lead.

Continuing their dominance, the Rams went on a 10-0 run to start the fourth. At this point, it was clear that the Rams would come out victorious. By the five-minute mark the Rams would lead by 33 points. In the last couple of minutes, the Rams and Gryphons traded shots but the Rams' constant lead would give them the 87-55 win.

The Rams finish their road trip in Sault Ste. Marie against the Algoma Thunderbirds. Tip off is at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 9, and can be streamed on OUA.tv.
