Gaels top Rams to wrap up regular season

TORONTO - The No. 10 Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team played their last regular season game on Sunday afternoon, taking a 3-0 loss to the No. 6 Queen's Gaels.

With both the Rams and the Gaels having already secured the third and second seeds in the OUA East coming into today's match, respectively, this battle had a little less on the line compared to next week's do-or-die playoff games.

A part of tonight's significance was the Senior Day celebrations, where the men's squad honored Joel Hannan (Toronto) who has spent two seasons with the Rams.

With his third start this season, Hannan started tonight's match and played its entirety. The opening set was the most competitive of the match, with a series of runs being made by both teams. As the Rams had a set-point at 24-23, they let the opportunity slip as Queen's put on the pressure and won three straight points to take the set 26-24. Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto) had a set-high of five kills and finished with a team-high of eight.

The Rams struggled from start to finish in the second set, going down early with a 9-3 score and finishing the set winning just 16 points. Queen's showed their offensive dominance in the second, tallying 13 kills on just 24 attempts. On the other end of the court, the Rams struggled offensively with just six kills on the same number of attempts.

Rams head coach Matt Harris decided to change his entire lineup in the third set, putting in five fresh legs. "I just wanted to see a different lineup out that can compete, and I think they did a great job of that. It was also an opportunity to give a different look, switching setters, and obviously not having Xander on the court provides us a different look," said coach Harris on the change.

The substitutes came out with plenty of energy, with Alex King (Ottawa, Ont.) and Taryq Sani (Scarborough, Ont.) leading the way with some strong play. The Rams led for almost the entire set but ultimately fell 25-21 against an impressive Gaels team.

With the graduating senior Joel Hannan being the only player to play the whole game, he had some words about his final regular season game, saying, "It meant a lot. It was really nice to battle with my best friends one more time, and even when the game wasn't going our way I was still so happy to be out there with everyone. I just appreciate those opportunities to be in those tough moments and those fun moments."

Similar to women's volleyball graduating senior Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.), Hannan's journey to becoming a Ram was rather inspiring, saying, "I didn't think I was ever going to play varsity volleyball, I was playing beach, I'm older, and I did a full undergrad before this. It's just been appreciating this opportunity, this facility, all the people at Ryerson and all the great treatment that we get. It flies by."

The Rams will be in Guelph on Saturday taking on the Gryphons in the opening round on the OUA playoffs. "Guelph's a strong team," said Hannan. "I think what we'll have on them is our defence, it's going to give us a lot of points against them. We know them really well and I think we can handle their serving quite well, so it's just gonna be a mentality game," he went on to express about the upcoming matchup.
