Gryphons too much for Rams in playoff loss

GUELPH, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team fell in the OUA quarter-finals to the Guelph Gryphons in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams, who were one of four Ryerson teams in playoff matchups on Saturday, started the day off with an early 1 p.m matchup at the Guelph Gryphon Athletics Centre.

The Rams were not the favourites on paper coming into the game, seeding third in the OUA East and taking on the number two seed of the OUA West. Ryerson's only matchup against the Gryphons in the regular season was a 3-0 loss on the Gryphons home court.

The opening set in this OUA quarter-final was arguably the most competitive of the match, with the Gryphons having a hot start and the Rams coming back to make things interesting. As the set began, both teams were a shell of themselves, tallying five straight errors to start the match and neither team keeping rallies going.

The Gryphons then catalyzed their strong play with two huge blocks on both Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto) and Taryq Sani (Scarborough, Ont.). The Rams bounced back, however, going on a 9-3 run to tie the game up at 17-17, then again at 21-21. Down the stretch, Guelph's powerful hitting showed to be too much for Ryerson as they took the last four points of the set to take it 25-21.

Despite keeping it close, the Rams generated just seven kills compared to Guelph's 14.

The second set was more sequences of short points and errors, as both teams tallied just 10 kills and over five errors each in the set. Despite strong blocks from Navreet Suhan (Mississauga, Ont.) and Riley Anderson (Cambridge, Ont.), the Rams were not able to generate much on offence as main hitters Ketrzynski and Greg Vukets (Auckland, New Zealand) were held to just six total kills after the second set. Guelph took the set 25-20, leading the entire way.

The third set summarized the match quite well, as the Rams kept it close, bringing it to 18-16 for Guelph, but ultimately never looked dangerous enough to finish the job. The Gryphons took control late in the set and won it 25-19.

Gryphons outside hitter Zarko Ubiparip was his team's most dominant player on the day, putting up 15 kills with just three errors on 26 attempts. Guelph was also nowhere to be found on the block but did enough with digs and offence to keep them in command.

On the other end, Taryq Sani led the Rams with 12 kills, which was the first time he led the team in kills all season. Ketrzynski was held to just nine kills in the match, something that Guelph definitely strived for going into the match.

This loss put an end to the Rams' season, while the Gryphons will move on to the OUA semifinals to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues.
