GUELPH, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams curling teams ran into some tough competition at this year's OUA championship, with neither the women or men emerging from pool play.
The Rams men's team put together a 3-4 record. The team had a tough start, going 0-2 on day one with an extra ends loss to Lakehead before falling to eventual champion Laurier. The squad got their first victory on Friday, a tight 4-3 decision over Guelph, before losing to Ontario Tech to sit at 1-3 after two days. The men went 1-1 on Saturday with a win over Algoma and a loss to Carleton, before closing the competition with a 6-3 win over Laurentian.
The men finished in a three-way tie for fourth in their pool and for the final quarter-final berth, but Guelph held a stronger cumulative draws to the button score which propelled the Gryphons into the medal round ahead of Ryerson and Ontario Tech.
On the women's side, Ryerson put together a 2-5 record to finish tied for sixth in their pool. Like the men, the women had a tough first day, going 0-2 with losses to Waterloo and Laurentian. Friday saw improvement as the Rams beat Trent 7-3 before losing in an extra end to Brock. On Saturday morning the team lost to Carleton but then earned a character win over a strong Laurier team which finished as bronze medalists. The Rams rounded out the competition with a loss to Western on Sunday morning.
