No. 7 Rams slam Lakers in 59-point victory

TORONTO — The newly-ranked No. 7 Ryerson Rams showed no mercy in a 107-48 win over the visiting Nipissing Lakers on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

Leading the team's efforts was fourth-year guard Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) who scored 24 points and picked up nine rebounds in 22 minutes on the floor. First-year guard Mouhamed Ndiaye (Longueuil, Que.) also set a new career-high with 19 points in the win.

The Rams established the pace of the game in the first quarter, aided by two massive plays by Frederick early in the matchup. Frederick scored 12 in 10 minutes as the Rams held a 28-14 lead after one on 68.8 percent shooting.

The team continued to press and didn't let up in the second quarter. Third-year forward Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) slammed down a highlight-reel put-back on a missed Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) three-pointer midway through the quarter to extend the Rams' lead as the half began to wind down. The team wrapped up the quarter by — yet again — doubling up on the visitors' scoring with a 52-26 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Ryerson's bench mob took to the court in the second half to protect the team's lead. Liam O'Leary-Orange (Toronto) scored several jaw-dropping dunks as the game progressed, aiding in the Rams' 82-38 lead at the end of the third quarter.

"It's always good to get all 12 guys playing double-digit minutes," says Rams head coach Borko Popic on clearing the bench in the third quarter. "It was good to see them continue to attack, compete, defend, and build the lead."

Another strong showing in the fourth brought an end to the matchup as the Rams earned a 107-48 win over the visiting Lakers to secure a crucial pair of points in the standings with just one game remaining in the regular season.

"We want to set records, top what we've done before and excel in every game," adds Frederick on the massive margin of victory. "That drive comes from the culture of this team and the culture of the school."

The Rams would finish up the game shooting 62.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. Ngom scored a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) in 21 minutes while teammate O'Leary-Orange finished the contest with 14 points and five rebounds.

The Rams will wrap up their 2019-20 regular season campaign tomorrow evening against the No. 6 Laurentian Voyageurs at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. on the Coca-Cola Court.
