No. 7 Rams handle No. 6 Voyageurs to end regular season

TORONTO - The No. 7 Ryerson Rams men's basketball team took down the No. 6 Laurentian Voyageurs with a convincing 106-68 score on Saturday night.

With tonight's win, the Rams brought an end to their regular season finishing with a 16-6 record. They also finished on a six-game win streak and won 12 of their last 13 games, which certainly is an ideal streak to be on, going into the playoffs.

The Rams started extremely well and lead the entirety of the game. A confident Tom Dumont (Montreuil, France) scored six quick points to start the quarter, which led to him finishing the match with 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Dumont finishes the season with the top three-point percentage in all of OUA in his first year in the league. The Rams had a 31-21 lead at the end of the first quarter and the lead only grew from there.

The second quarter was when Ryerson took control of the game by playing outstanding defence and being quick in transition. Two straight and-one plays along with a number of steals in the second allowed the Rams to finish the quarter on a 13-2 run and lead 58-38 at the half.

Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.), who finished with a game-high of 28 points in 24 minutes, had nothing but praise when it came to his team's defence, saying, "Defensively we've been really locked in, that's a testament to the coaches and us practicing hard and being on the same page defensively."

The Rams continued their strong defence, which played a crucial role in not allowing the Voyageurs to get back in the game. The Voyageurs struggled offensively, especially primary scorer Kadre Gray who shot 5-of-15 on the night.

"We have length, quickness, athleticism, so we threw a range of guys at him to make it difficult for him. [...] We tried to limit clean looks for him as much as possible, and for the most part did a really good job," said Rams head coach Borko Popic when asked about his team shutting down Gray.

Finally, with the Rams up 91-57 with eight minutes left, many of the starters were subbed out and Ryerson was able to see the game out to take it 106-68.

With the pair of French-speaking rookies Mouhamed Ndiaye (Longueuil, Que.) and Tom Dumont each scoring 13 points along with impressive defence, it was yet another reminder of how valuable the pair of wings have shown to be this season.

"I think we are just getting more confident, it feels natural for us to play with the starting five," said Dumont about himself and Ndiaye's strong play in the recent stretch of games.

The Rams will be back this Wednesday on home court, playing in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
