TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team dropped their fourth consecutive game on Friday night, which was a 3-1 loss against the experienced Guelph Gryphons.
Tonight's goalscorers were
Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) for the Rams and Stephanie Gava, Miranda Lantz and Madison Melo for the Gryphons.
The Rams started the match on the right foot, putting a ton of early pressure on the Gryphons, which eventually led to the Rams opening the scoring at the 7:44 mark in the first. The Rams dominated the period in its entirety and tallied 15 shots to Guelph's four.
The Gryphons had a very strong showing in the second, shutting the Rams offence down and only allowing them to one shot the entire period. Guelph eventually got on the board halfway through the second period, as they punished a Rams slashing penalty.
The third period was more of the same dominance from the Gryphons, as defender Miranda Lantz scored at the 16-minute mark and tallied her second point of the night. Halfway through the third, the Rams could not stay out of the box with a tight whistle in tonight's matchup, and the Gryphons scored their second power play goal of the game to go up 3-1 with eight minutes left in the game.
Down 3-1, the Rams were graced with two power play opportunities but failed to convert on either as the Gryphons held the Rams off to give them their fourth straight loss.
"It felt like we faced two different teams," said Rams head coach
Lisa Haley when discussing Guelph's bounce back after a slow first period. Haley expanded her thoughts on Guelph's quality, saying, "When you're the defending national champions, I guess you can find that within you sometimes. They've got a lot of experience to lean on in those situations."
The Rams will look to snap their losing streak and continue their playoff pursuit Saturday night in St. Catharines taking on the Brock Badgers.
