TORONTO - Despite outshooting the Golden Hawks 34-22, the Rams failed to put Laurier away in regulation and fell 3-2 in overtime on Thursday.
As Senior Night, the Rams honoured senior student-athletes
Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.),
Taylor Dupuis (New Liskeard, Ont.),
Marcus Hinds (Toronto),
Holden Cook (Whitby, Ont.),
Steven Harland (Toronto), and
Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.). On Thursday, Paliani and
Gregory DiTomaso (Etobicoke, Ont.) put the Rams on the board to maintain their own five-game point streaks.
Just two minutes in, a Hinds screen in front allowed DiTomaso's wrister to beat Laurier's Tyler Fassl. His sixth of the season came after DiTomaso was awarded the Number Four Award for being the Rams most outstanding defenceman this season.
After Fassl came up with a huge save on
Jacob Kamps (Pickering, Ont.), Laurier's Chayse Herrfort tied things up on a low snapshot past
Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va.).
While the Rams continued to test Laurier's defence, the opening frame ended up in a 1-1 stalemate.
Early in the second, a Rams power play came and went. Forrest came up big with a 2-on-1 stop, and Ryerson killed off a Laurier power play themselves.
Starting with a rush by Harland, the Rams held on to possession in the Hawks' end for the latter half of the second. Despite outshooting Laurier 20-12, the 1-1 tie held up after forty.
Six minutes into the third, Ryerson found their go-ahead goal thanks to Paliani. The forward took a phenomenal backhand saucer pass from
Patrick Fellows (Mississauga, Ont.) before sniping it past Fassl's glove.
When the game seemed destined for Ryerson, a failed clearing attempt with just over a minute to go forced the Rams to scramble. Laurier's Ethan Wiseman capitalized, knotting things up and sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, action went back and forth. An unassuming breakout five minutes in allowed a clear shooting lane for Laurier's Danny Hanlon, who just beat Forrest to take the game 3-2.
"We beat ourselves," said head coach
Johnny Duco post-game. "(Laurier) were who we thought they'd be and we made one too many mistakes."
Paliani, one of the Rams' graduating seniors, was appreciative of Thursday's ceremony. "Tonight was a way to look back on the four years and appreciate all the good memories and friends I've made. Just would've wished to get the two points."
The Rams have the weekend off until they take on the York Lions in a rare 11:00 a.m. school day game next Wednesday, February 5th on Mattamy Home Ice.
