Rams dominate in road win over Warriors

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams cannot stop winning as they dominated an injury-ridden Waterloo Warriors team 85-55 on Wednesday night. A strong first half by the Rams, highlighted by an impressive showing by forward Jama Bin-Edward, playing in her hometown, would give the Rams a lead the Warriors could not catch up to.

The third game of the new year for the Rams started off evenly matched as the Warriors capitalized on a slow start by the Rams. The score was 13-11 in favour of the Rams by the five-minute mark.

Strong defence by the Rams is what kept them in the game early on, but they would have to work on their offence if they wanted to increase their lead. That is exactly what they did and they capitalized when the Warriors made 10 turnovers. The Rams led 21-15 at the end of the first quarter.

By the second quarter, the Rams found their rhythm and were putting on an offensive showcase. The Rams maintained their six-point lead for the first couple of minutes as the Warriors got four quick unanswered points and had some success beyond the arc. However, the Rams' lead would turn dangerous nearing the five-minute mark as they took an 11-point lead. A huge part of the Rams' offence would be forward Jama Bin-Edward who had 21 points at the half, which is just three points less than the Warriors total points. The Rams would lead by 24 heading into the second half of the matchup up 48-24.

The Warriors struck first in the third again, but an easy three-pointer by Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) would end their run. Bin-Edward would have easily eclipsed the 30 point mark this game but, an injury early on in the third took her out of contention for the remainder of the game. The Warriors started a comeback in the third, shrinking the lead to 15 at one point. A Rams defensive change would allow for the comeback as the Warriors outscored the Rams 21-16 in the third. Despite the Warriors increased offense, the Rams remained resilient and increased the lead to 19 at the end of the third.

The Rams fixed their third quarter struggles and came back with their aggressive defence in the last quarter of play. The defence coupled with consistent shooting would give the Rams the 85-55 win as the Warriors just could not keep up with the Rams' quick and aggressive offence.

The Rams continue their road trip on Saturday, January 18 against the Toronto Varsity Blues. With tip off at 6:00 p.m., catch the game live on OUA.tv.
