Rams complete road trip with win over Toronto

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams won their eighth game in a row as they took down the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday night.

A strong second half performance by the Rams would give them an 84-53 lead as they finished their road trip.

The Rams won the tip off but would not be able to get anything going until past the two-minute mark. Forward Bronwyn Williams (Toronto) would get the first bucket with an easy jumper. This matchup would not start off as a high scoring game, with many of the points coming from the Rams. The score would be 12-2 at the five-minute mark, in favour of the Rams. The Varsity Blues would shortly find their groove as guard Ellen Ougrinov connected for a three. The Varsity Blues would slowly chip away at the lead getting to within six but would end the quarter trailing by nine.

The Varsity Blues would shoot first in the second, draining another three. Some back and forth would ensue as the Varsity Blues kept scoring. The Rams would always maintain the lead, however, despite the effort from the Varsity Blues. The Rams would hold a six-point lead midway through the quarter. A three-point play by guard Hayley Robertson (Toronto) and a three pointer by guard Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) gave the Rams a double-digit lead heading into the half.

Right out of the gate, Scotten would get another three to open the scoring in the third quarter. Toronto's Jasmine Lambert would answer with another three, but Scotten would drain her second three in the span of seconds. The Rams' offence shined this quarter as they penetrated well and were able to get their own rebounds for second chances. They would add 10 points to their lead making the score 58-38 heading into the fourth.

The Rams would strike first once again in the fourth and final quarter. One thing the Rams did really well this game was drawing fouls in transition, creating three-point plays. Robertson had a couple, and both Sarai Bailey (Toronto) and Rachel Farwell (Rothesay, N.B.) got one as well. This quarter also showed the Rams' shooting depth and their prowess from beyond the arc. Robertson, Scotten, Bailey, and Taite Cleland (Ancaster, Ont.) all contributed to the score with three-pointers. The Varsity Blues just could not catch up to the Rams in the second half and would lose this game 84-53.

The Rams are back at home on January 24, 2020 against the Ottawa Gee-Gees for a Top 10 battle. Tip off is at 6:00 pm ET and can be streamed live on OUA.tv.
