WATERLOO, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams men's basketball team followed in the women's team's footsteps and took home a big 95-74 win against the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night.
This game turned into a dunk fest as both teams got off the floor for some impressive showing of athleticism.
The Warriors came out of the gate firing, maintaining a small lead for the first two minutes of the game. The Rams would eventually get the lead, but a consistent back-and-forth would not allow the lead to go far. The Rams would start increasing the lead after the five-minute mark, as they find some success from beyond the arc. Guard
Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.) would lead the way with two threes and forward
Keevon Small (Montreal, Que.) would add as well. By the end of the first 10 minutes the Rams would increase the lead to 15 points.
The Rams showed good ball control in the second both offensively and defensively. The Rams would already have 24 rebounds compared to the Warriors' 18. The Rams would hustle hard on both ends to lead the game 35-21 midway through the quarter. The Rams would put on an offensive clinic in the final minutes of the half, dunking the ball and shooting threes, taking a 16 point lead into the half.
Kokko would open the third with another three, and he would end up with four made threes and a game-leading 29 points. The Rams would continue their dunking showcase in this quarter as
Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal), Small, and
Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) would all get the chance to show off their hops. The Rams would put up 33 points in the quarter to lead 80-53.
By the fourth quarter it was clear to see that the Warriors were outmatched by the length and size of the Rams. A consistent play by the Rams would allow them to close the game with a 95-74 win.
Both teams shot 34 per cent from beyond the arc, but Ryerson's 56 per cent field goal shooting, and 42 rebounds were unmatched and keys to this impressive road win.
The Rams are back in action on Saturday, January 18 as they face rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues. Tip off from Toronto's Goldring Centre is at 8:00 p.m. ET. Watch the game live on OUA.tv.
