Late penalty kick lifts Ridgebacks over Rams

OSHAWA, Ont. – A solid effort at both ends of the pitch went for naught on Friday afternoon for the Ryerson Rams men's soccer team, as a late penalty kick goal by Ontario Tech dealt the No. 5 ranked team a 1-0 loss.

The loss is the first of the season for the Rams, and just the third all-time against Ontario Tech (formerly UOIT).

Much of the game was a battle of the goalkeepers as Ryerson's Ali Ghazanfari (Stouffville, Ont.) recorded five saves while Ontario Tech's Nicholas Miller posted eight.

Miller got a little help from his defensive line, as well, as two Ryerson shots were cleared by centre back Jacob Begley.

Ontario Tech broke a scoreless tie in the 77th minute when Chris Campoli converted a penalty kick. It is the third goal Campoli has scored against Ryerson this season, after netting two in the teams' first meeting on September 15.

Ryerson outshot Ontario Tech 15-9, including an 8-6 margin of shots on target. Rams captain Abdallah El-Chanti (Toronto) led the charge with three shots on goal while Kyle Laborde-Ayres (Scarborough, Ont.) registered two in a late push for the equalizer.

The Rams don't have much time to dwell on the loss as they are back in action on Sunday, September 22 when they visit the No. 7 ranked Toronto Varsity Blues. Kickoff is set for 3:15 p.m. and will be available on OUA.tv
