Rams top Trent for third win of the season

TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams' on-target passing and elite precision helped the team to their third victory of the season, a 2-1 win over the Trent Excalibur on Friday evening at Downsview Park.

Ryerson's Katie Joyce (Petty Harbour, Nfld.) led the game with a goal and an assist.

Joyce's goal came in the 44th minute after a nearly scoreless opening first half. Alex Rodkin (Whitby, Ont.) set up BreAnah Webster (Pickering, Ont.) for a quick run down the wing. Webster sent the ball across the box straight to the feet of Joyce who would slam in her first goal of the season. The Rams took a 1-0 lead at the half, and Webster's 44th-minute assist marked her fourth point in just five games this season.

"I loved the fact that we capitalized on a great one-touch play on the first goal," says Rams head coach Natalie Bukovec. "It was exactly what we were working on in practice this week."

In the 75th minute, Brooke Pearson (Pickering, Ont.) would take a deep shot from outside the 18-yard box; a perfect curve and top corner placement left no chance for the Excalibur keeper, as the Rams took a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the match.

Trent's Cherilyn Yeboah cut Ryerson's lead in half in the 85th minute, but a late-game push would prove unsuccessful as the Rams walked away with a 2-1 victory.

Ryerson outshot Trent 6-2 after 90 minutes. Rams goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula (Brampton, Ont.) made 2 saves in the win.

"It was a great team performance and we're all buzzing after this win," says Joyce.

The win over Trent sees the Rams improve to a 3-2-0 record on the year. The team's third win of the season matches their total win count from last season, a feat achieved late in October for the 2018 Rams.

"We don't want to be a team that barely scrapes by," continues Joyce. "We're excited to be in contention with the top teams this year and really make some noise."

The team will return to action on Sunday as they host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at 1:00 p.m. at Downsview Park.
