TORONTO - Six different goal scorers provided the Ryerson Rams with their largest margin of victory to date as they defeated the Queen's Gaels 6-0 on Friday.
Ryerson overcame their two-game losing streak and finally managed to slot their first power-play goal of the season via
Lauren Nicholson (Dresden, Ont.). While the Gaels entered Mattamy Home Ice having won their last pair, they could only muster 11 shots on goal, compared to the Rams' 24.
Ryerson dominated in the opening 20 minutes. The squad outshot Queen's 8-1, and saw plenty of time in the offensive end. On the power-play,
Lauren Nicholson rushed the crease and split the Gaels' defence before sliding it in for her second of the season. The Rams finished the period on another power-play.
While Ryerson could not convert on their early second period power-play, captain
Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.) sniped home a clean feed from
Karli Nummikoski (Thunder Bay, Ont.) a few minutes later, making it 2-0.
Nummikoski found the scoresheet again after a Queen's turnover left her alone in the slot. She made no mistake and fired it top-shelf for her third of the season. Two minutes later,
Erika Crouse (Kirkland Lake, Ont.) redirected a
Teagan Gartley (Kitchener, Ont.) point shot, extending the Rams' cushion to 4-0.
Queen's had a goal waved off in the dying seconds, and Ryerson's
Rachel Seeley (Ottawa, Ont) continued her shutout effort into the third.
Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) kept the offence going, securing her third marker of the season off a scrum five minutes into the final frame.
Madison Lalonde (Blenheim, Ont.) then lit the lamp off a 2-on-1 halfway through the third. Ryerson got into some penalty trouble late in the game, but ultimately pulled away 6-0.
"The scoreboard was not important to us today," said head coach
Lisa Haley. "Holding the team to 11 shots should set you up (well) to be successful in the game. We happened to get six (goals) but it was more about being tight defensively." Haley also spoke to her squad's special teams. "Our power-play got going which was something we were very focused on. Our penalty kill was solid."
Both Ryerson's power-play and penalty kill were dead last in the OUA entering tonight's match, with the squad going 0-for-25 with the man advantage. "Our special teams gave us a lot of confidence tonight."
The Rams are back for more at home Saturday against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, with puck drop set for 7:15 p.m. on Mattamy Home Ice. As usual, Ryerson students are free with their OneCard.
