TORONTO – The No. 5 Ryerson Rams hosted the undefeated Windsor Lancers Friday night and handed them their first loss of the season. The Rams would take this one 69-52, leading the game each quarter.
"They're a good team, we knew it would be a tough battle tonight," said head coach
Carly Clarke. "It was nice to get ahead, and comfortably finish the game."
The Lancers would get on the board first with a three by guard Nyamuoch Teny. A turnover by the Rams would lead to another three for the Lancers by guard Eve Uwayesu. The Lancers would be up by six within the first minute. The momentum would quickly shift in favour of the Rams as forward
Jama Bin-Edward (Waterloo, Ont.) would cut the lead in half with a three-pointer of her own. She would follow that up with a steal and an easy layup. A couple more threes by the Rams would give them a 17-12 lead heading into the second.
The second would continue in favour of the Rams. Forward
Bronwyn Williams (Toronto) would start the scoring with a fade away and would follow that up with a three-pointer. She would end up with 15 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. A last second buzzer-beater by forward
Rachel Farwell (Rothesay, N.B.) would give the Rams a 10-point lead heading into the half.
The Rams would continue their offensive pressure in the third. A key-player in tonight's win was Bin-Edward who was relentless defensively getting steals and blocks, and offensively putting up double-digit points, including two three-pointers in the third. She would end up with 15 points, three blocks, and one steal. The Rams would lead 57-34 with one quarter left to play.Â
"They're very physical," said Bin-Edward. "We had to make sure that we're able to bring the physicality first like getting steals and adding ball pressure and then offensively just attacking them."
The Lancers would amp up the pressure in the fourth. They would get a lot of rebounds, 28 to be exact, against Ryerson's 19. They would have trouble converting on their opportunities though, so the Rams would maintain their sizeable lead and ultimately take the win 69-52.
"We defended really well for three quarters, anyways," said Clarke. "I'm a little disappointed, I thought we let up a bit in the fourth, but certainly a great defensive effort."
The Rams are back in action Saturday, November 16th as they head to York to face the Lions. Catch the action on OUA.tv at 6:00 pm ET.
