Rams suffer rare regulation loss against Lakehead

TORONTO - In just their third defeat in regulation this season, the Ryerson Rams fell to the Lakehead Thunderwolves 3-2 on Saturday night, snapping the Rams' 5-game win streak.

In their loss, Ryerson still managed to maintain their third-best in the OUA penalty kill, going 2-for-2. Their power-play unit also clicked at 2-for-4, accounting for both the squad's goals. Cavin Leth (Taber, Alta) and Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont) were responsible for the Rams' two markers. Head Coach Johnny Duco gave Troy Timpano (Pickering, Ont) the nod in net, allowing Garrett Forrest (Ashburn, Va) a rest.

Leth gave the Toronto audience what could be a contender for goal of the year halfway through the opening frame. The forward went coast to coast on the man-advantage and split a trio of Thunderwolves at the blueline before slipping it five-hole. Leth's tally also marked his second goal in as many nights against the Thunderwolves. However, asides from Leth's dangles, the first period saw no more action.

Paliani got the second period going on a positive note, capitalizing early on a rebound during another power-play. Things unraveled a little for the Rams throughout the rest of the frame. The squad sacrificed three unanswered goals, and were forced to call a timeout to slow down the game's tempo. Lakehead ended up outshooting Ryerson 25-16 after the second.

To begin the third, Ryerson kept Lakehead from a shot on goal for over seven minutes as they tried to tie it up. Despite high tension and pressure early, the Rams' one-goal deficit would remain until the final whistle, and Lakehead won 3-2.

"It feels good, it's always nice to contribute and help out the team" said Leth in regards to his highlight-reel goal. "As nice as it feels to be producing, it's still kind of a sour taste in my mouth not being able to win this game tonight."

The Rams allowed more than two goals tonight for the first time in eight games. "They (Lakehead) came out hungry for a must-win two points on a three game road trip where they hadn't won yet." said Coach Duco post-game. "Tonight we got out-worked and out-executed so we're going to leave disappointed."

Ryerson is back in action on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for an OUA West Division clash against the Gryphons in Guelph.
